The AI Citation Audit: How to Find Out Which Sources ChatGPT and Perplexity Are Using Instead of You

AI search and chatbot interface showing how generative engines surface sources

Here is the uncomfortable truth about search in 2026: ranking #1 on Google no longer means you are the answer. When a prospect opens ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and asks, “Who is the best [your category] in [your market]?”, the AI doesn’t necessarily quote the highest-ranking page. It quotes whatever combination of sources it has decided to trust. And for a frighteningly large number of B2B brands, that trusted source isn’t the company website at all. It’s Reddit, Wikipedia, a competitor’s blog post. It’s a G2 thread from 2023.

If you have never run an AI citation audit, you have no idea what AI is saying about you, or who it’s recommending instead. This is the gap between being indexed and being quoted, and closing it is the single highest-leverage move a marketing team can make this quarter.

Here’s the step-by-step audit you can run in an afternoon.

Step 1: Build a Prompt Test Set (30 minutes)

You can’t audit something you haven’t tested. Start by writing 15–25 prompts that represent how a real buyer would talk to an AI engine. Skip your branded queries, those are easy wins. Focus on the un-branded, high-intent prompts that decide deals.

Use four prompt categories:

  • Category prompts: “What are the best [your category] companies in [your market]?”
  • Comparison prompts: “How does [Competitor A] compare to [Competitor B]?”
  • Problem prompts: “How do I solve [the pain your product solves]?”
  • Recommendation prompts: “Recommend a [your category] for a [your ICP] under [budget].”

Also, write each one twice, once formally, once the way a frustrated buyer would actually type it. AI engines respond differently to tone.

Step 2: Run the Prompts Across Engines (45 minutes)

Open four tabs: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Run every prompt in every engine. Capture three things per response in a simple spreadsheet:

  1. Was your brand mentioned? (Yes / No)
  2. Which competitors were mentioned?
  3. Which sources or URLs were cited?

Perplexity makes this easiest — it shows citations inline. ChatGPT and Gemini are sneakier; you may need to ask a follow-up like “What sources did you use for that answer?” to surface them. Copy the cited domains into your spreadsheet exactly as they appear.

After 25 prompts × 4 engines, you’ll have 100 data points. That’s enough to see the pattern.

Step 3: Read the Citation Patterns (30 minutes)

Now sort your spreadsheet by cited domain. You will almost certainly see one of three patterns, and each tells you what to fix.

Pattern A — Reddit and Quora dominate. This means your category is decided in community conversations, not on vendor websites. AI trusts unscripted, peer-to-peer experience. Action: first, build authentic presence in 2–3 subreddits and forums where your buyers actually hang out. Above all, don’t spam, instead, answer questions, share frameworks, and only then link out, and only when it’s genuinely relevant.

Pattern B — A few competitors are quoted repeatedly. Their content is doing what yours isn’t: directly answering the question with structured, citation-ready passages. Open three of their cited pages and look at the first 200 words of each. You’ll see clear definitions, named statistics, dated updates, and crisp lists. That’s what AI is grabbing.

Pattern C — Wikipedia, industry directories, or trade publications dominate. In this case, AI is defaulting to “neutral” sources simply because no individual brand has earned the citation yet. Honestly, this is actually the best news of the three, in other words, the field is wide open. Whoever publishes the most quotable, authoritative content first wins the category.

Step 4: Diagnose Why You’re Being Skipped

For every prompt where you weren’t cited, ask three diagnostic questions:

  1. Do you even have a page that answers this prompt? (Often: no.)
  2. And if you do, is the answer right there in the first 150 words — or instead buried somewhere down in paragraph nine?
  3. Does the page carry trust signals — author name, credentials, publish date, original data, third-party citations?

AI engines are pattern-matching for quotable, attributable, recent answers. As a result, if your page reads like a brochure (“We are passionate about delivering solutions…”), then it gets skipped, regardless of how high it ranks on Google.

Step 5: Build the Fix List

Translate the audit into a 30/60/90-day plan:

  • Days 1–30: Rewrite the top 5 pages where you should be cited but aren’t. Lead with a one-sentence direct answer. On top of that, another good move is to add an author bio, along with a publish/update date, and finally, at least one piece of original data or a named source.
  • Days 31–60: Publish 3 new “passage-ready” pieces targeting the highest-volume prompts where Reddit or Wikipedia is winning. Use clear H2 questions and crisp, quotable answers underneath each.
  • Days 61–90: Earn 3–5 third-party mentions (podcasts, guest posts, industry roundups) that AI engines can use as corroboration. AI rarely quotes a brand that no one else talks about.

Then, re-run the same prompt set every 30 days. Keep in mind, AI visibility moves faster than Google rankings, so you’ll see the needle shift inside a quarter if the work is real.

The Bottom Line

Search didn’t disappear; it got quieter and more selective. In the end, the brands that win the next 24 months won’t be the ones with the most keywords or the biggest ad budgets. On the contrary, they’ll be the ones who figured out, ahead of their competitors, that being quoted matters more than being ranked.

Run the audit. Read the patterns. Fix the gaps. Your buyers are already asking AI about you, make sure the AI has something true, recent, and quotable to say.
